不是儿戏

谢立和Tom 在一所美国大学里合作开展一项科学实验。因为过程中遇到了一些困难，所以他们在实验室里探讨对策：

谢立：I don’t know what went wrong. (我不知道哪里错了。)

Tom: Don’t feel so sad. Cheer up. You’ve done your job.

     （不要难过。振作点。你已经做得很好了。）

谢立：But our experiment has turned out to be a failure.

     (但是事实是，我们的实验失败了。)

Tom: Relax for a couple of days. I’ll face the music.

     (你休息几天，我来处理实验过程中遇到的问题)

谢立： Tom， we are not playing children’s games here. This is a scientific experiment. (汤姆， 我们不是在儿戏，而是在做科学实验。)

Tom: I’ve never taken the experiment as child’s play, and I’m playing the game. (我从来没有把这次实验视为儿戏，我正在努力地解决问题。)

谢立：You say you’re playing the game. It’s a rather important experiment. （你自己说的，你在“玩游戏”,这可是一项重要的实验啊。）

说完，谢立气愤地离开了实验室。Tom很疑惑，不知道为什么谢立会如此气愤。

分析点评

两人对英语俗语和俚语的理解存在偏差是矛盾出现的主要原因。如果将“face the music”、“play the game”直译为“面对音乐”和“玩游戏”，难免显得不够严肃、认真。 但是“face the music”作为一个美国俚语，其含义是“勇敢地面对困难、接受应得的惩罚”，而“play the game”是指“遵守规则、认真做事”，并没有“儿戏”的成分。在语言学习或者跨文化交际中，需要特别注意俗语和俚语部分，其中蕴含着丰富的文化内涵，仅按字面翻译，很容易造成交际障碍。
